Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven is proud to share that our Hazel Street Project is nearly complete! What once were three vacant, privately-owned lots are now home to four beautifully designed two-family houses, bringing new energy and opportunity to the Newhallville neighborhood.
This project, created in partnership with the Yale Urban Design Workshop, demonstrates what can be achieved when design innovation meets a strong commitment to affordable housing. By reimagining the site plan, we were able to maximize space and create four new lots where only three existed before, adding four new homes for four owner-occupants and four rental units for tenants.
Each home for our Hazel Street project is thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of families: the owner’s units feature four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, while the rental apartments offer two bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Beyond new construction, the project also includes energy efficiency retrofits for 30 nearby homeowners, carried out by our partners at Efficiency For All. Together, these efforts are building not just housing, but a healthier and more sustainable community.
The affordability of these homes was made possible thanks to the support of the State Department of Housing, the City of New Haven HOME funding, and the State Housing Tax Credit program administered by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority. Their partnership ensures that these homes will be accessible to families who might otherwise be priced out of the market.
We hope you’ll take a drive down Hazel Street (numbers 86–100) to see this exciting transformation for yourself. These homes are more than new construction, they’re a model for what we aspire to bring to more families and neighborhoods throughout New Haven.
