Honoring MLK Jr. Day Through Service and Action

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Martin Luther King Jr.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day, Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven’s Community Building and Organizing department joined Inspired Communities Inc. and a group of dedicated volunteers who came together on January 19, 2026 to engage in a powerful act of service to the community! They gathered at 324 Shelton Avenue in New Haven to begin the clean-up of a space intended to become a future community centered hub.

The day included a thorough cleanup, removing old items and disposing of unusable waste. Reusable materials were separated and donated while others were stored elsewhere for future use. We would like to recognize everyone who participated: Kim Harris, Stephen Cremin-Endes, Stacy Maddern, Adam Rawlings, John Wettemann, Naiserian Kyama, Thomas, and Shawn. The before and after transformation was incredible to witness, thanks to their hard work and dedication.

By cleaning this space, they took a first crucial step in making this space a reality to the community. The progress made yesterday embodies positive change that we strive for in our community and where we live. Thank you to everyone who served our community through active participation!

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.– Martin Luther King Jr.
