Building Leaders, Building Communities

In 2004, NHS of New Haven recognized the need to develop a comprehensive approach to neighborhood revitalization. Our Revitalization Demonstration Project on Blake Street was designed to address the fact that neighborhood revitalization involves more than just housing development; we needed a holistic approach to neighborhood revitalization that considered the effects of public image, market forces, physical conditions and resident engagement on a neighborhood. This was the core of the healthy neighborhoods approach to neighborhood revitalization.

Over the years, NHS has expanded on this model and taken it to different targeted blocks, where residents are empowered to take charge of their neighborhoods while participating in block parties and organized street clean-ups, and actively connecting with other residents to sustain community development.

NHS offers three distinct opportunities to encourage resident leadership: Community Leadership Institutes sponsored by NeighborWorks® America, and both Resident Leadership Workshops and Youth Resident Leadership Workshops sponsored by NHS of New Haven.
