CO-CREATING SUSTAINABLE NEIGHBORHOODS
“I support NHS New Haven because NHS has shown itself to change with the times, adjusting
its development model and building practices.”
~ Ann Greene, supporter
Community Sustainability seeks economic development that also benefits the local environment and quality of life. It focuses on environmental and economic sustainability, urban infrastructure, social equity and municipal government. Sustainable communities manage their human, natural, and financial capital to meet current needs while ensuring that resources are available for future generations. When planning development projects, civic engagement and responsibility, ecological integrity, economic security and social well-being are all driving considerations.

OUR IMPACT ON OUR ENVIRONMENT
Graduates of our program are change-makers; publishing books, leading workshops, and helping make solar power more available to New Haveners.
We have taught hundreds of people how to maintain their home, save energy, and practice healthy, sustainable gardening and landscaping.
We’ve installed over 30 storm water management systems, diverting water from the overtaxed municipal system and preventing pollution from entering our rivers and the Long Island Sound.
EVERYONE DESERVES A HEALTHY HOME
Did you know the air quality in your home and your community affect your health? Did you know polluted water can pollute the fish you catch? At NHS we make every effort to foster environmental stewardship, so all our neighbors can be healthy and thrive.

SUSTAINABILITY STARTS WITH UNDERSTANDING
Our sustainability classes show you how to save money and create a healthier environment for you and your loved ones. Learn about: Organic Vegetable Gardening; Home Energy Savings; Pesticide-Free Landscaping and more.
YOU CAN BE AN ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER
Participants in our Environmental Leadership Program learn about climate change, healthy soils, pollution prevention, and sustainable building and gardening practices. Then they learn how to effect change in the areas that matter most to them.
