Saving energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions and utility bills. The Lab serves as a testing ground for some of the energy saving techniques eventually used in NHS houses.  Other energy conservation methods showcased in the Lab are more suitable for small commercial buildings. NHS offers Lab tours to homeowners, developers, politicians, educators, students, and the general public to inspire others to include green features in their projects.

• The Lab implements a variety of strategies that reduce the Lab’s peak demand on the electric grid by more than 66%. This limits the need to purchase electricity from the grid. Click here to view a short video explaining how solar panels work.

• Thermal comfort is achieved through the use of a mirco-combined heat and power (MCHP) co-generation system, ceiling fans, and strategically placed blinds, awnings, and window films.

• The use of on-demand hot water heater.
