In August 2012, Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven co-sponsored a new annual festival in Newhallville called the Promise Land Community Festival. Organized by the Christian Community Commission, a non-profit outreach and leadership development organization, the festival was created to celebrate the spirit, culture, history, family, and youth of this historic neighborhood, and featured Gospel entertainment, a basketball tournament, games with prizes, raffles, and face-painting. It also offered residents a unique opportunity to discover if their homes have historic significance, like the home at 279 Bassett Street that was built for Captain Albert F. Laudensack, a prominent figure at the Winchester Repeating Arms factory.

“The purpose of the Promise Land Community Festival,” said Pastor Morris, one of the organizers of the Promise Land Community Festival and Executive Director of the Christian Community Commission, “is to recapture the history, promise, and comfort of Newhallville, and to empower individuals, families, and businesses to begin the process of rebuilding and revitalizing Newhallville for the next chapter in its venerable history.”

On Saturday, August 1, 2015, NHS had the pleasure of participating in the 3rd Annual Newhallville Promise Land Festival, which was held at the Lincoln Bassett School. The event kicked off the month of August with a day of family fun! Numerous vendors from the New Haven area offered back-to-school giveaways, social services, and health care information. There was also a Promise Land Basketball playoff that draw in a large youth crowd. Live entertainment from local gospel acts kept the energy and spirit going for all who were in attendance!

NHS staff enjoyed monitoring the Festival's "kiddie land", which featured an obstacle course that was a big hit with the children! NHS employees helped participants through the course and completed the journey with a victory slide at the end. NHS also manned a tent nearby for parents and guests to learn more about our services. We look forward to participating in this event again next year!
